Why Basic Life Support Skills Save Lives

Cardiac arrest can happen anywhere, at any time. Having the confidence and skills to respond can make the difference between life and death.

Understanding cardiac arrest and sudden emergencies

Basic Life Support (BLS) is the foundation of emergency care. It involves recognizing a life-threatening emergency, such as cardiac arrest, and providing immediate assistance through high-quality chest compressions and rescue breaths. Without prompt intervention, the chances of survival decrease by approximately 10% for every minute that passes without CPR.

What Basic Life Support Training Involves

BLS training covers the vital knowledge required to manage a casualty until professional medical help arrives. This includes learning the structured ‘DR ABC’ approach (Danger, Response, Airway, Breathing, Circulation) to ensure the scene and the casualty are managed safely and effectively.

Our training focuses on realistic scenarios and hands-on practice. By using manikins and simulated AED units, you gain the confidence to apply your skills under pressure, ensuring you can act decisively when it matters most.

Learning Outcomes

Who Should Take a Basic Life Support Course

Life-saving skills are relevant to everyone. Our courses are tailored to meet the needs of different groups across London.

Healthcare and Care Professionals

Many healthcare workers, including nurses, dentists, doctors, and care home staff, require regular BLS certification to maintain their professional registration and ensure patient safety. Our training meets the standards required by clinical governance and regulatory bodies.

Workplace Staff and Organisations

Employers have a legal and moral responsibility to provide first aid coverage in the workplace. Designating staff for BLS training ensures your organisation is prepared to handle medical emergencies, protecting your most valuable asset—your people.

Members of the Public and Community Responders

Knowing how to perform CPR is a vital life skill. We welcome parents, sports coaches, community group leaders, and any individual who wants the confidence to help a family member, friend, or stranger in an emergency.

Emergency Situations Covered During BLS Training

Our training prepares you for the most common and critical life-threatening emergencies you might encounter.

When the heart stops pumping blood, every second is critical. We teach you how to manage an unresponsive casualty, assess their breathing, and initiate immediate CPR while ensuring emergency services are contacted.

Key Response Steps:

A blocked airway can rapidly lead to unconsciousness and cardiac arrest. You will learn the correct techniques for clearing a foreign body airway obstruction in both mild and severe choking cases for adults.

Practical CPR and Life Saving Skills You Will Practise

Our Basic Life Support training is highly practical. We believe that ‘learning by doing’ is the best way to master life-saving skills.

You will practice performing chest compressions and rescue breaths on professional-grade manikins. Additionally, you will be trained on how to safely use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), understanding how it provides voice prompts to guide you through the rescue.

Knowing what to do once a casualty is breathing but unresponsive is vital. You will learn how to place someone in the recovery position to keep their airway clear and how to continuously monitor them until help arrives.
