Why Basic Life Support Skills Save Lives
Cardiac arrest can happen anywhere, at any time. Having the confidence and skills to respond can make the difference between life and death.
Understanding cardiac arrest and sudden emergencies
Basic Life Support (BLS) is the foundation of emergency care. It involves recognizing a life-threatening emergency, such as cardiac arrest, and providing immediate assistance through high-quality chest compressions and rescue breaths. Without prompt intervention, the chances of survival decrease by approximately 10% for every minute that passes without CPR.

What Basic Life Support Training Involves
- Core principles of Basic Life Support
BLS training covers the vital knowledge required to manage a casualty until professional medical help arrives. This includes learning the structured ‘DR ABC’ approach (Danger, Response, Airway, Breathing, Circulation) to ensure the scene and the casualty are managed safely and effectively.
- How BLS training prepares you for real emergencies
Our training focuses on realistic scenarios and hands-on practice. By using manikins and simulated AED units, you gain the confidence to apply your skills under pressure, ensuring you can act decisively when it matters most.
Learning Outcomes
- Safe scene assessment
- Correct airway management
- Effective rescue breathing
- Management of choking
- Checking for responsiveness
- High-quality chest compressions

Emergency Situations Covered During BLS Training
Our training prepares you for the most common and critical life-threatening emergencies you might encounter.
- Cardiac arrest and unresponsive casualties
When the heart stops pumping blood, every second is critical. We teach you how to manage an unresponsive casualty, assess their breathing, and initiate immediate CPR while ensuring emergency services are contacted.
Key Response Steps:
- Assess the scene for danger
- Check the casualty's response
- Call 999 or 112 immediately
- Open the airway and check breathing
- Start high-quality chest compressions
- Choking and breathing emergencies
A blocked airway can rapidly lead to unconsciousness and cardiac arrest. You will learn the correct techniques for clearing a foreign body airway obstruction in both mild and severe choking cases for adults.
Key Response Steps:
- Encourage the casualty to cough
- Perform up to 5 back blows
- Perform up to 5 abdominal thrusts
- Repeat cycles until the object is cleared
- Initiate CPR if the casualty becomes unresponsive
Practical CPR and Life Saving Skills You Will Practise
Our Basic Life Support training is highly practical. We believe that ‘learning by doing’ is the best way to master life-saving skills.
- Cardiac arrest and unresponsive casualties
You will practice performing chest compressions and rescue breaths on professional-grade manikins. Additionally, you will be trained on how to safely use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), understanding how it provides voice prompts to guide you through the rescue.
- Recovery position and casualty care
Knowing what to do once a casualty is breathing but unresponsive is vital. You will learn how to place someone in the recovery position to keep their airway clear and how to continuously monitor them until help arrives.
